Step one: Start with Labs that will in fact provide you with actionable insight!
  • Let's start with first things first. If you have the tick then get the TicKit and have the tick tested. (This is a good kit to keep on-hand in tick country)
  • Second, if you have been bitten or suspect that are infected then you need a Lab confirmation. The best Lyme test available in my opinion is: The Nanotrap® LA Test which is a Lyme Antigen Urine Test. It is SIMPLE, NON-INVASIVE, DIRECT and provides Detection of the Lyme Bacteria with the highest accuracy. The price includes a follow-up test for free if the initial test has findings. This test provides insight at any stage of infection and also provides insight into the effectiveness of treatment. The commonly used IgeniX test cannot say this.
    • The Nanotrap® LA Test can provide valuable information, at anytime in the infection cycle, about the presence of the Bb antigen when used at the time of initial infection, during and after a course of treatment, and in some cases of recurrent disease.
    • More info here: https://www.lymedx.com/ or visit my lab page for the Nanotrap Lyme Antigen Test
  • Third, if there are suspected co-infections (there always are) then I recommend Cyrex Labs Array 12: Pathogen Associated Immune Reactivity Screen. This test is extensive and can be very helpful for the following reasons:
    • Recommended for Patients Who Present with chronic conditions such as gastrointestinal distress, fatigue, body aches or unexplained and general inflammation, including neuroinflammation.
    • May have been exposed to bacteria, viruses, parasites, molds, and spirochetes associated with multiple autoimmunities.
    • Have not fully responded to clinical interventions, such as detoxification and dietary modifications.
    • The list of pathogen antibodies is formidable and can be viewed here: http://www.joincyrex.com/the-cyrex-system/array-12-pathogen-associated-immune-reactivity-screen
    • This test can also be a double check for Borrelia burgdorferi IgG and Babesia +Ehrlichia +Bartonella IgG Antibodies.
  • Fourth, in Dr. Hale's practice, if you have ANY sort of digestive issue or G.I. issue such as acid stomach, can't eat certain foods, gas, bloating, distention, cramping, loose stool or constipation or alternating between both, etc...if any G.I. issue exists then Dr. Hale often uses 3 very useful and insightful tests:
  • 1. Comprehensive Intestinal Barrier Test from Dunwoody Labs
    • Includes Diamine Oxidase (DAO), Histamine, and Zonulin plus LPS.
    • This test also includes a very important marker called LPS - Lipopolysaccharide.
      • When a patient tests on the low-end of the spectrum for an immune response for LPS - IgG, LPS - IgA and LPS - IgM, this is a good indication that their immune system is not functioning as it should
  • 2. The GI-Map test from Diagnostic Solutions. This is a DNA Stool Test providing:
    • Unparalleled DNA based stool testing
    • True quantitative PCR testing
    • Includes Bacteria, Yeast, Parasites, Viruses
    • Antibiotic resistance genes
    • H. pylori virulence factors
    • Metabolic, Immune and digestive markers
    • Current updates to the GI-MAP include:
    • Additional Autoimmune Triggering Bacteria
    • New H. Pylori virulence factors
    • CMV and EBV viruses
    • Expanded Parasitology
  • 3. Cyrex Labs new - Total Secretory IgA (SIgA)
    • By measuring Total SIgA, you can access your first line of immune defense. Measuring Total SIgA, whether optimal, high or low, offers insight into mucosal immune function or dysregulation
  • 4. If neurological symptoms exist then other tests will be recommended such as Dunwoody Labs - Advanced Oxidative Stress Test or Quicksilver Scientific's TriMercury Test or Cyrex Labs Neurological Autoimmune Reactivity Screen. Info on these labs will be provided.

  • 5. General Nutrient Health - it is often important to assess. The body can't work without proper fuel and co-factors that promote health.
    • General nutrient deficiency tests to determine background deficiency patterns or imbalances then SpectraCell's Micronutrient test that assesses Functional Vitamin, Mineral and Antioxidant levels.
      • Vitamin, mineral and antioxidant defciencies have been shown to suppress the functions of the immune system which can contribute to the overall condition of one’s health and diseases
      • 50% of people taking multivitamins are still nutritionally deficient
  • A comprehensive Hair Analysis test is often very useful to determine essential mineral, trace mineral and toxic minerals and important interrelated ratios.

  • 6. Symptoms and Signs (overall body systems are subjectively assessed via the Maestro Symptom Survey - taken online and is privacy protected). Provides subjective insight into bodily systems.
  • 7. Genetic testing - providing insight into whether certain 'circuits - SNP's) are affected due to genetics. Often this is vital information to inform the therapeutic process and involves insight into detoxification and methylation pathways, genetic liver enzymes, oxidative stress gene, glutathione and SOD genes, NAT genes which deal with detoxification of environmental toxins and symptoms that can be related to early onset aging issues. This sort of information is important to know. Patients with Lyme Disease often have impaired detoxification which can result in poor clearance of die-off endotoxins, biotoxins and such. Dr. Hale offers a discount on genetic testing.
  • 8. If mold exposure is present or suspected then appropriate tests will be suggested.
  • 9. In the German Biological Medicine field - the Disease Barrel concept is of paramount importance. So, in Dr. Hale's practice the cellular milieu ...and the terrain of the body is assessed and supported. To use an analogy, "if the body's fish bowl (aqua-culture) is not properly maintained then the eco-environment for the fish and algae will suffer. Likewise, the Terrain if the most foundational assessment when restorative health is the aim.

"It is much more important to know what sort of patient has a disease, than what sort of disease a patient has." C.H. Parry (1755-1822)
